Finish-a-thon Signups

Announcing... finish-a-thon 2006! Yes, we're doing it again.

ETA: Note: sign-ups are now closed!

Remember all those poor, neglected plot bunnies that have been starving from lack of attention, because all those ficathons kept on having higher priority? The stories you wish you could finish, if only you could find the time? Well, fear not, the finish-a-thon is coming to the rescue!

The finish-a-thon is a ficathon, with all the ficathon-like things like deadlines and fellow volunteers to encourage you, but with this ficathon, you write your own ideas. But since part of the encouragement of a ficathon is writing things for other people, what we're going to do, is vote for which story ideas people should write.

The way it works is this:

1) Sign up.
In your sign-up comment, list a short description all the plot bunnies, unfinished stories (apart from other ficathon stories) and vague ideas that you are putting up for voting on. Say what universe(s) it's in, a very brief description, and some idea of what rating and type (gen, het, slash) you think it will be, to give people a good idea of what they'd be voting for.

Also give your voting preference, whether you wish your story to be voted on by participants only, or all interested parties.

2) Join or friend [livejournal.com profile] multific, so that you will recieve assigments, important notices, and reminders. I am NOT going to notify people individually.

3) A poll is made, each "question" consists of the potential stories of one participant.

4) We vote for which story we want each person to finish.
The winning story in each section is the one which that author has to work on.

5) Each writer works on their winning story, and finishes it by the deadline. They then put it up on the web somewhere, either in their journal, or on a website.

6) I will post a master-list of all the stories, so that people can find them.

7) Everyone rejoices!

Questions

What do you mean, not other ficathon stories?

Unfinished stories from other ficathons already have a ficathon for them. This is the Home For Lost Plot-Bunnies that don't have a ficathon of their own.

What if I want to use this story for fanfic100?

(or crossovers100 etc)

Well, this is supposed to be for stories not associated with other ficathonish things... but if it so happens that after you've written it, you find that it fits into your Big Table, well, those challenges aren't averse to using stories from other sources, are they?

Are there any restrictions? This isn't an anti-slash thing, is it?

No restrictions. They're your own ideas, hence, your responsibility. Just let people know, in the descriptions, what kind of story you think it will be, so that they can vote wisely.

What about sequels? Can I include bunnies for those?

Sure. Just give a link to where we can find the previous story or stories. To make it easier for me, just give the URL(s) without the HTML markup -- that makes it easier to cut-and-paste the information when I'm making the polls.

What if my story is a huge epic that I'll never be able to finish in 8 weeks?

We want to encourage story writing, so, if a story is an epic, still put it on the list, but commit to writing 10,000 words of it, or finishing it, whichever is shorter.

10,000 words? You gotta be joking!

I did say "epic", didn't I? It's not as hard as NaNoWriMo.

Last year, a participant committed to writing 15,000 words towards her epics. At least two participants wrote stories which were more than 10,000 words long. You can do it.

Is there a minumum number of bunnies required?

Yes. Three. We need something to vote on, after all.

Is there a maximum number of bunnies allowed?

Yes. Ten. Otherwise we'll never be able to decide. Just pick the bunnies you most want to write.

Who gets to vote on what I write?

When you sign up, say what you would prefer:
(a) other participants only
(b) all and sundry (that is, get your friends to vote so you get a better idea of what your peers want)

I will put a note as part of your poll entry as to what your preference is. I won't be able to enforce the preferences, but we can hope that people will be considerate.

What if I don't know what story to vote for?

Try. It is possible to not answer a poll question. But please do try to pick one story from everybody if you possibly can.

What about my own stories? Do I pick one of mine as well?

Nup. The point is to find out what other folks here wish you to write.

What if there's a tie in the votes? Which story would I write?

Toss a coin. If you can't toss a coin, I'll toss one for you -- just ask.

Arrgh! I never thought people would vote for *that* story!

People will surprise you. They'll vote for *anything*, however unlikely you think it. So be prepared to write *any* of the story ideas you put up, don't assume that people won't vote for the wierd one that you put there half-jokingly.

Is there a minimum length requirement?

Unless you committed to writing 10,000 words of an epic, no. However, it seems a bit pointless to waste an 8-week ficathon on a drabble. But I don't want you to be sweating over length requirements. Stories have natural lengths; try to pick story ideas which would naturally fit into more than a drabble.

Is there a maximum length requirement?

No, but do remember you've only got 8 weeks.

I didn't finish! Can I have an extension?

No. If you have a Real Life reason for not being able to finish (like "my computer died" or "my mother broke her hip") then you can have an exemption. After all, it's your story, you will finish it later.

Otherwise:
(A) post what you've managed to write so far, indicating that it isn't finished. You will then get a week's grace period in which to finish or revise the story. Note that those who do not post anything by the deadline will NOT get a grace period.

OR

(B) Write me a nice note saying, "sorry, I couldn't finish". The flimiser the excuse, the more grovelling required. You get a gold star for participating.

OR

(C) Drop out without a word or excuse. This will get you banned from participating next time.

I finished my story, but it isn't betaed!

As with unfinished stories, if you post something by the deadline, you get a week's grace in which to revise. If you don't post anything, you do not get the grace period. Do not treat the grace period as an extension to the deadline. It is not.

I didn't finish my story last time. Can I still sign up?

If you gave it a go, sure. If you bailed out for no reason and didn't even bother contacting me, no.

Edited To Add:
Please note: this does NOT mean that if you didn't finish last time you can't participate. I wasn't intending on naming names, but I guess I'll have to. The only people who are disqualified from participating this year are [livejournal.com profile] ladyjanelly, [livejournal.com profile] alicamel and [livejournal.com profile] wizefics.

I offered 5 of these bunnies at last years finishathon. I liked them enough to give them another chance.

ALL are from the fandom Blakes 7.

1.) Anna/Alta Morag/Avon In this Alta's a dom and Anna and Avon both subs. Alta is curious about the effect Avon has had on Anna so makes Anna join her in playing with Avon once he's caught. (Alta and Anna are both bad guy women. Avon's an ambiguously good/bad guy.) (Explicit het, with kinks.)

2.) Hal Mellanby (a blind man)/Kerr Avon. Hal lets Avon try his vision enhancer while blindfolded to experience what he 'sees'. It would be like the 3 sisters of legend who had one eye and one tooth among them & shared it. (Explicit male slash.)

3.) Orac (a computer) shrinks Avon and Vila down to doll-size when they ask him to demonstrate molecular reduction (or whatever it was called). (Likely this would be explicit male slash.)

4.) Avon gets replaced by his clone, who is jealous of Avon for having a 'real life' & not quite sane. (I think it would likely be slash & include some violence & humiliation, etc.)

5.) The Ultras (aliens who copy people's memories & who got wiped out in canon by our heroes) automatically backed up all newly acquired data on another planet- someone later stumbles over the archive and transcribes Cally and Avon's personalities into androids. (Gen, have no idea what plot it might develop, if any.)

6.) PGP- Avon and Orac are both ghosts and they want revenge on the one(s) responsible for their destruction. They're both resisting going on to their respective afterworlds. (Gen)

7.) Servalan gets a kerravon email address in order to pretend she's him & writes to Blake, luring him into a trap.(Gen, possibly very short, I don't know if there's a plot here.)

8.) Sinister tale- Avon born a lefty, which puts his parentage in doubt, so he's forced to become right-handed. (Gen)

9.) Rapunzel retold as B7. Servalan is the evil queen/witch who has Avon prisoner. Blake as the rescuing Prince who goes through torment.(Probably lots of mental & physical angst & possibly explicit male slash)

10.) Blake survives GP, while Avon dies. Blake continues to fight- in jungle warfare he accidentally injures a raven, which he keeps as a pet. It dies saving him, croaking out one word, 'Blake' in Avon's voice, as it dies. But it doesn't end there... (Gen)

forgot about ratings. I never use them...

I'll try to rate them. I don't know the nuances of the rating system. I use things like 'explicit slash' instead. This is the best I can do.

3.) Mature audiences .

4.) Mature audiences .

5.) All audiences.

6.) All audiences.

7.) All audiences.

8.) All audiences.

9.) Mature audiences.

10.) All audiences.

I only wish I could get involved in this! I'm basically out of the loop until I finish this degree...must focus... :)

Tricking myself.

[identity profile] alara-r.livejournal.com 2006-08-21 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Apparently lately I only write stuff when I have a ficathon deadline. But I have too many WIPs, so I shouldn't be working on new stuff. This ficathon is exactly what I need; last year I actually got a new chapter done on a story that I hadn't worked on since 2001.

So here I go again. Same deal as last year. I am notorious for writing immensely long fanfics that I never finish. So what I am committing to is to write 15,000 words of a fic out of these 10. Some of these fanfics will probably be finished within 15,000 words, and some won't. Most of the fanfics have already been published in part, so I will include links if they have. All of these are alternate universes that break off from the fandom's canon somewhere. Not the exact same list as last year.

1. Only Human (http://www.alara.net/trek/oh.html)
Fandom(s): Star Trek TNG
Description: Q lost his powers in "Deja Q" and then never got them back. Three years later he tries to kill himself.
Type: Het.
Rating: Going to go NC-17.
Likely to finish in 15,000 words?: Hell no.

2. Working In Groups (http://www.alara.net/trek/groups.html)
Fandom(s): Star Trek TNG
Description: This is Deja Q, the anti-deus-ex-machina remix. What if the Q Continuum had not intervened in any way after Q's selfless act?
Type: Gen
Rating: PG
Likely to finish in 15,000 words?: Maybe.

3. Twin Poles: Journeyman of Magnetism (http://www.alara.net/xbooks/twin.html)
Fandom(s): X-Men Comics
Description: My version of the origin of the character Joseph.
Type: Mostly gen.
Rating: PG-13.
Likely to finish in 15,000 words?: Maybe.

4. Burning Time (http://alara-works.livejournal.com/5461.html#cutid1)
Fandom(s): Star Trek TNG
Description: Sequel to Guidance, an AU to "Only Human" above. Soran from "Generations" kidnaps Q. Is scheduled to have Picard, Guinan, and Kirk in major roles, as well as angst, torture, sacrifice, and entirely one-sided sexual fantasies.
Type: Slash.
Rating: R.
Likely to finish in 15,000 words?: Probably not.

5. Seventeen Things That Might Have Happened To Q: (http://www.alara.net/trek/17things.html)
Fandom(s): Star Trek
Description: Along the lines of the "Five Things" meme.
Type: Het *and* gen *and* slash.
Rating: PG-13.
Likely to finish in 15,000 words?: Yes.

6. The Prince In Winter (http://www.alara.net/ajer/amnesty/prince.html)
Fandom: X-Men Comics
Description: Joseph deals with Rogue's death.
Type: Het
Rating: PG
Likely to finish in 15,000 words?: Yes.

7. Beauty or the Beast (http://www.alara.net/ajer/amnesty/beautybeast.html)
Fandom: X-Men Comics
Description: Genderswap of Magneto's clone Joseph, and how a twenty-something amnesiac *woman* with Magneto's powers and fragments of his memories would have been seen very differently by the X-Men.
Type: Femslash.
Rating: PG-13.
Likely to finish in 15,000 words?: Maybe.

8. Do It Again 4: That Only A Mother (http://www.livejournal.com/users/alara_r/82666.html)
Fandom(s): Star Trek
Description: Do It Again is a series of stories set in an AU deliberately created by Q, in which Q's appearance is female. The fourth story involves Q and Tasha Yar immediately after Yar's death.
Type: Mostly gen.
Rating: PG-13 or R.
Likely to finish in 15,000 words?: Yes.

9. Judgement Day: (http://www.alara.net/trek/judgement_day.html) Churchill's Black Dog
Fandom(s): Star Trek
Description: Judgement Day is a series of stories set in an AU where Q's side lost the civil war in the Continuum, and humanity was confined to Earth. This, the only of the pieces here that has actually not been begun, is Picard's story.
Type: Gen.
Rating: PG-13.
Likely to finish in 15,000 words?: Yes.

10. The Wolf and the Hound (http://www.alara.net/ajer/amnesty/wolfhound.html)
Fandom: X-Men Comics
Description: After Xavier's apparent death during Magneto's trial, Magneto and Scott Summers end up being co-headmasters of the New Mutants.
Type: Gen, maybe het
Rating: PG
Likely to finish in 15,000 words?: Maybe.

All my bunnies in a row:

1. untitled crossover
Fandom(s): Pirates of the Caribbean/Muppet Treasure Island
Description: The ends of the earth are stranger than anyone could have imagined.
Type: Gen, probably will be allusions or mentions of het and slash...and I guess technically beastiality because of Kermit/Piggy. ;)
Rating: PG-13 (swearing and such...I'm not a total perv)

2. When Pintel Met Ragetti
Fandom: Pirates of the Caribbean
Description: Pre-trilogy, dealing with how Pintel and Ragetti met and why they formed such a strong bond.
Type: Slash
Rating: R

3. untitled crossover
Fandom: Moulin Rouge/Rocky Horror Picture Show
Description: The first time Dr Frank N. Furter came to Earth, it wasn't quite ready for him. Will contain Christian/Frank, drag, glitter, singing -- fun stuff!
Type: Slash
Rating: R

4. The Responsibility of River Tam
Fandom: Firefly
Description: A continuation of this story, first part here: http://taskir.livejournal.com/74081.html#cutid1 . AU fic wherein River is the older Tam sibling and Simon the younger. River is sent off to train as a Companion, where she meets Inara Serra, and they eventually form a close bond. Meanwhile, River's brother Simon is sent to the Academy. Story will mainly focus on the relationship between River and Inara, while staying somewhat close to 'canon' for the Tam siblings (River's still a bit unbalanced, the Academy is still not a good place to be).
Type: Slash
Rating: R to NC-17

5. untitled
Fandom: Wedding Crashers
Description: Gloria always gets what she wants. An expansion of this drabble: http://community.livejournal.com/femslash_today/23265.html?replyto=506337
Type: Slash, Het, Incest
Rating: R to NC-17

6. untitled
Fandom: Fables (comic)
Description: Rose Red is a wild child. Cinderella is a spy. The math isn't difficult.
Type: Slash
Rating: R

Argh! What am I doing!?

[identity profile] ex-cozzybob450.livejournal.com 2006-08-21 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I really shouldn't be doing this because I CAN'T finish any bunny longer than, like, ten chapters--it's just a psychological thing or something. Believe me, I've tried... but not hard enough, right? Pray for me? Pretty please? xD

1. Every State Line
Fandom(s): Gundam Wing
Description: A little lost after the war, Duo explores his heritage and sets out to discover America his own way--he hitchhikes, he bums, he goes to a pow wow, he even loses his virginity! One state at a time. xD
Type: gen? possible slash, but it'll be light. I dunno if he loses his virginity to man or woman yet, but I'm sure it's going to be an OC of some sort. Maybe. Might even be Heero, we don't know. ;)
Rating: heavy R--there's some violence, too.

2. Stitches
Fandom(s): Gundam Wing
Description: Despite the fact that one of his ten step mothers is a witch (not wiccan, but a real, by-the-prick-of-my-thumb, witch), Quatre Raberba Winner does not believe in magic. Until now. When he pisses off his step mother for the last time, the woman transfers his soul into the body of a doll. His original body falls into a coma as a result, and all of his friends and family gather at the hospital while doctors are left stunned at the lack of reason to his sudden drop in consciousness. But that's not all. A body cannot live without it's soul for more than seven days, and Quatre must learn how to break the curse and get his real body back before it dies, and he remains trapped in plush forever. This was actually my first true fanfic and GW fic, but I never finished it. It's not even half-way written, and if it gets voted, I'm going to completely rewrite it.
Type: some slash tones, some het tones... not sure who gets who, yet.
Rating: R

3. Begging The Sky
Fandom(s): Farscape
Description: John wakes up after the events of Bad Timing to find out that nearly eighty cycles have passed by without his permission. He discovers through Stark that he and Aeryn had been 'neutralized' into a pile of crystals and were stored into deepest recesses of Moya, believed to be dead for last several decades. But now Stark's finally found a way to bring them back, and they're missing three crystals of Aeryn--she cannot be brought back until they find them. John, shaken, vows to restore his fiance and unborn child, but it isn't that easy. Never is. The title is taken from a poem by Kazimierz Sowinski. It's been started, but not posted.
Type: het, probably some minor slash. various pairs... you might be surprised. ;)
Rating: R

I'd put in others, but these are the ones I trust myself to finish at the moment. Not saying I'll actually succeed, but I'm sure as hell going to try.

The first three bits of Half a Dozen of the Other are here, here and here.

The first installment of Out of Joint is here. There's no direct plot connection between this and the next story, and it has a completely different cast. (Everything connects up later on in the series.)

Type: gen
Rating: PG

4.
Fandom: Good Omens
Description: Them ficlet. This idea came from a remark in "The Omen" about Damien never getting sick. Basically, Adam gets the flu for the first time. Accidentally on purpose.
Type: gen
Rating: G

At this point, I'm looking at a December/January finish date.

Fancy meeting you here :)

And yes, definitely winning on the obscuredom!

[identity profile] mistraltoes.livejournal.com 2006-08-23 12:01 pm (UTC)(link)
There is no way I'm ever going to be able to choose from those; I want nearly all of them. Ticky boxes! We need ticky boxes!

[identity profile] mistraltoes.livejournal.com 2006-08-23 12:04 pm (UTC)(link)
And again, I say, Ticky Boxes! Heh. :)

(What do you bet Ticky Boxes were invented by a P trying to avoid making a choice?)

Okay, I'll do this!

First, let me state that I am committed to completing a Katrina auction fic during the next few weeks/month. BUT, as we have a decent amount of time to work on stories for this ficathon, I think I can handle joining in.

So.

My bunnies:

(1) "The Takers"
Fandom: The Sentinel, gen with a bit of het
Aliens come to Earth and abduct - hey, I don't even have to say it, do I? Blair does his best under impossible circumstances and Jim frets a lot. I've already written about 8K words. If this challenge wins, I think I'll probably be able to double that, but I don't think it will be done-done in two months. There is a bit of het sex.

(2) "Rundown"
Fandom: The Sentinel, gen
Jim reacts to the events of S2P2 by having a nice little public breakdown in LAX (probably). There may be some PGish language, but no violence or sex.

(3) "Dear Sandburg"
Fandom: The Sentinel, gen
The next installment in my "Summer of 1999" series. A ~1K-2K story in which Blair reacts to a letter from Jim. I can't imagine that either Blair or Simon will get out of this without swearing, and a wall may get punched.

(4) "Goa'uld Busters"
Fandom: The Sentinel/SG-1, gen
A side-line to my "Summer of 1999" series. Jim's birth mom and Naomi Sandburg go a-hunting in the MacDonald family's Winnebago. I don't really have a plot in mind yet, but if I let this percolate it will grow one. There may be a little violence, but I imagine the two ladies involved will keep their language civil.

(5) "Eighty Games of Scrabble"
Fandom: SGA, gen
Elizabeth Weir and Woolsey play, well, you know, en route to Atlantis during "Misbegotten" (I think). I can't see there being much off-color language or them whacking each other or anything.

Och! I can read. Really....

[identity profile] jedi-penguin.livejournal.com 2006-08-23 01:34 pm (UTC)(link)
And I see that I didn't follow directions properly. Sorry. For the last one, it is part of this series:
http://vampirecows.com/odd/authors/shelley/shelley2.html

Also, perhaps I should describe it this way:
AU in which Buffy does not go back through the portal in "Anne." Giles rescues her a few hours later, but almost fifteen years have passed for Buffy. In this part, the Slayer has trouble taking up her old life, but not as much trouble as her mother and friends have accepting the 30-something widow and her two children.

Yay!

Wow, I don't even watch SGA (I tried; only Rodney seemed able to make me care, and after a full episode I want to drown *him*) and Eighty Games of Scrabble is tempting me right past your TS fics here....

[identity profile] izhilzha.livejournal.com 2006-08-23 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
*preens*

I've got at least 3 people on here that I'm having the same problem with. :-D I love this ficathon.
