I'm using IE6 on Win98SE. Ah. I suspected as much. I can't test IE, since I don't have MS-Windows in any shape or form, but IE has a reputation for being non-compliant to the CSS standards. Unfortunately, because of the way my web-host is set up, until they change their webserver from Zeus to Apache, I can't do dynamic pages with browser detection, so I've gone for my default CSS layout, rather than the extra special CSS layout which only works with IE.
I'm not sure that I understand your reference to shrinking the browser window.
Well, because the resolution of my screen is 1280x1024, in order to see whether something is readable at 800x600, I have to shrink my browser window to that size.
