kerravonsen: I signed up to write WHAT? (ficathon-signup)
[personal profile] kerravonsen
So, the results of this poll are such that I will probably be running the Multi-Fandom Lyric Wheel in June-July.

I will be using the AO3 ficathon engine for it, so anyone who wishes to participate will need to join that site: (http://archiveofourown.org/). I have an invite going spare, and I could probably get more if need be. Please let me know if you need one. There needs to be a minimum of ten people signing up to make this ficathon viable.

I have also revised the FAQ: please give feedback!

With all this messing around with the facilities at AO3, I have a hankering to use their setup to run the Multi-Fandom Lyric Wheel again, next year.
I'm intending for the Finish-a-thon to run mid-March to the end of May, and I also want to participate in the tthdrabbles Birthday Fest in February-March, and if that's the case, there's only a few different slots available to run a Lyric Wheel in, so I thought I'd ask y'all what you would prefer.

I have created collections on http://archiveofourown.org/ for both the Multi-Fandom Lyric Wheel and for the Finish-a-thon. Each year has a separate sub-collection. PLEASE, if your fiction is on AO3, add the stories you did for these ficathons to the appropriate collections.

And if your fiction isn't on AO3, I do have an invitation to give away.

And, yes, I am planning to run the Finish-a-thon again next year. Hopefully in March-April.

Okay, I've decided that, yes, I will run a gen "remix" ficathon, and I've even started a community, [livejournal.com profile] gen_remix. I've been working on writing up rules for it. I've decided to go for the "no pairings" definition of "gen" for the purposes of the ficathon. Also, since most people seemed to either not want anonymity or didn't care about it, I'm not going to go the anonymity route.

However, I have a few more things I need feedback on.

There are a few different ways that stories could be posted.

a) people host their own stories; there is a master-post in the community where people comment to give the links to their stories
Advantages: easier to organize
Disadvantages: stories come in in dribs and drabs, no real central place hosting the stories

b) people post stories to the gen_remix community (or a sister community) with tags
Advantages: one place to look, comments on stories are easy
Disadvantages: stories come in in dribs and drabs, long stories need multiple posts

c) I host all the stories on my site (as I did for the Multi-Fandom Lyric Wheel); people email stories to me and I put them up, not revealing them until all the stories are in, and then putting "comment" posts up for people to give their comments on the stories.
Advantages: one place for stories, one "reveal"
Disadvantages: more work for me, more work to set up story comments

d) I set up my fiction site so that participants are given logins so that they can post their stories there themselves.
Advantages: one place for stories
Disadvantages: stories are not hidden, more work to set up story comments, users need to learn how to use the system

e) I set up my fiction site so that helpers are given logins, so that they can help put up stories there and reduce my workload.
Advantages: one place for stories, one "reveal"
Disadvantages: more work to set up story comments, helpers need to learn how to use the system, there may not be any volunteers to help anyway

Which do you think would be better? Other suggestions?

I am considering whether I will run a gen_remix ficathon; like [livejournal.com profile] remix_redux but gen only. The rules would be similar to RemixRedux, but all the qualifying stories would have to be gen (and the remixes also).

It won't, however, be worth doing if there aren't enough folks interested. I know there's a huge number of folks who do Remix, but that doesn't necessarily mean that anyone would be interested in doing both, or in doing a gen remix instead.

The Multi-Fandom Lyric Wheel assignments have gone out, barring one person whose email bounced.
One person was very difficult to make assignments for, because their "read" list was smaller than their "write" list, so I basically added their "write" list to their read list. (shrug). I am assuming that if one is willing to write in a fandom, one is willing to read stories in that fandom.

Apart from that, everyone has at least one fandom in common with their assignee, and most people have two. Note that the people who put down "Doctor Who, only 9th and 10th Doctors" were just listed as "Doctor Who" because I was not going to get that fine-grained. I did try splitting all "Doctor Who" listings into "Old Who" and "New Who", but that biased the matches towards those who listed Doctor Who, so I reverted back to treating all Doctor Who as the same.

Go forth! Write!

Welcome to the Multi-Fandom Lyric Wheel. This is a story-challenge where each participant writes a story from the criteria given by another participant -- but in this case, what you get given are song lyrics.

I did say that I'd run another Lyric Wheel in January-February, so I'd better do that; expect the proper announcement very soon. A few things to note and/or comment on:

- this is going to overlap with the RemixRedux ficathon. Sorry, can't help it, it's earlier this year than I thought.
- because Remix is increasing its word-count to 1000, I thought I'd decrease our word-count to 500. Is that okay with everyone?
- I'm hoping to start the sign-ups this week, the assignments next week, the due date 6 or 8 weeks from that. I'm inclined to make it 6 weeks, so that there's less overlap with Remix. After all 500 words in 6 weeks should be okay, even if you have another ficathon running, right?

(Edited to Add:) I'm also intending that people list fandoms they're interested in, so that I can do non-random matching this time. The idea is that participants will list fandoms they can write and fandoms they're interested in, and I will use that to try to match requests with writers. However, since I don't expect that many participants, it probably won't be possible to have perfect matches, so I also don't intend for writers to be compelled to write in the given fandoms, but it would be nice for them to try.

Since I really do want to do another Multi-Fandom Lyric Wheel, but so many things clash because there are more ficathons than ever, I think a good time to do it will be January-February next year. So pencil that in your diaries, okay?

A number of people have been asking me about whether there will be a finish-a-thon this year, and when it will be. So I thought I'd just mention here, that, yes, there will be a finish-a-thon, but it is going to be earlier this time, so as not to clash with Christmas things as well as not clashing with NaNoWriMo. The vague dates are:

Sign-ups: mid-August
Writing starts: start of September
Due date: end of October

Anybody interested should friend this community, because this is where announcements are going to be.

Just a little note to say, yes, I do intend to run the Finish-a-thon again this year, but since it was clashing with Christmas stuff last year, I'm intending to run it much earlier, finishing before NaNoWriMo rather than starting after it.

So: sign-ups in August, writing in September-October. That is my plan.

Remember, everyone, finish-a-thon stories are due at the end of this week! That's the 28th, Australian time. For most of you that will be the 27th. I shall post the master-list post near the end of the day, to give you more time. At that point, everyone (except those with exemptions) must put their stories up somewhere (a web page, or their journal) whether finished, unfinished, or unbetaed. Then give the link in a comment to the master-list post. I will then allow another week for people to make revised versions, and post them. This way we can have our stories and revise them too.

Announcing... the finish-a-thon!
Remember all those poor, neglected plot bunnies that have been starving from lack of attention, because all those ficathons kept on having higher priority? The stories you wish you could finish, if only you could find the time? Well, fear not, the finish-a-thon is coming to the rescue!

The finish-a-thon is a ficathon, with all the ficathon-like things like deadlines and fellow volunteers to encourage you, but with this ficathon, you write your own ideas. But since part of the encouragement of a ficathon is writing things for other people, what we're going to do, is vote for which story ideas people should write. the details )

Please pimp this everywhere. 8-)

Please note, the dates of this have been devised carefully to make sure that the writing period does not conflict with NaNoWriMo.

Okay, so I'm going to be doing this finish-a-thon, where people vote for what plot-bunnies one should turn into stories. Question: should people vote on their own bunnies, or not?

Hi folks, I am still intending to do the finish-a-thon, and just to whet your appetite, and more importantly, to get feedback and remove any misunderstandings early, I present you with a draft copy of the Rules of the finish-a-thon, so I can make them better before the thing actually happens.
