It's embarrassing, really, but in the original Gallifreyan, his chosen name is closer to the meaning of "Maestro" than "Master"; in fact, Lucy calls him Maestro just because calling him Master would just make her laugh.

(This is the secret the Master of our universe wants no one to know--that he took that name only because he was an exceptionally good musician.)
